Introduction to Bioinformatics Module This page contains information needed for the completion of the bioinformatics lab for November 23rd, 2004. On this page, you'll find a link to the lab assignment, links to bioinformatics web servers that we'll be using, and links to sequences that we'll be using during this lab.
Lab Assignment Description This lab assignment will introduce undergraduate students to bioinformatics and some of the basic bioinformatics tools. The students will be exposed to biological databases and using text searching and sequence similarity searching to find database records. They'll also be exposed to open reading frame prediction. The lab assignment is focused on the assembly process that occurs during a genome sequencing project. The students will go through the steps of decontaminating reads, assembling reads, finding open reading frames, and using the predicted open reading frames to search biological databases to identify genes in the assembled genome. The pdf to lab assignment can be found here .
Examples Several of the examples require sequences for the students to download and use. Here are links to those sequences.
Bioinformatics websites Here are the links to all the websites that the students will be visiting while working on this assignment.
